Project Title

Sustainable insect and disease management in the sugar beet cultivation of the future to secure cultivation and processing in Rhineland-Palatinate

Project description

Sugar beet growers face increasing challenges – climatic changes lead to the emergence of insects and diseases, which farmers are increasingly unable to combat as active ingredients and pesticides are diminishing. In addition, the lack of financial support leads to disadvantages and distortions of competition on the European market. The cultivation areas in Rhineland-Palatinate and Southern Hesse, as well as the processing site in Offstein (Rhineland-Palatinate), are to be maintained and promoted in the long term. Sugar beet cultivation in Rhineland-Palatinate is to be preserved as a valuable component of sustainable, resource-efficient crop rotation and for added value in rural areas. If possible, this should be accomplished, through detection and purposeful biological control or alternative measures (crop rotation etc.). In the project, new cultivation strategies are being developed which contribute to increasing production and securing earnings. The farmers learn to diagnose the pests that are no longer generally known. The development of a "pest calendar" and the proper diagnosis require implementation in digital media and forecasting models.
