Project Title

Development of dormancy induction in micropropagated broad leaf trees for long time storage in vitro (OG: DENDROTEC)

Project description

Rooted as well as unrooted shoot cultures in vitro kept on sterile culture media can be stored at low temperatures over month. But micropropagated cuttings of broad leaf trees rooted in sterile miniplugs directly cannot do this without vitality loss. On the other hand dormant plantlets of broad leaf trees (winter dormancy) are often stored at low temperatures as they do this in winter time. The main goal of this project will be induction of dormancy of plantlets grown in miniplugs under sterile conditions. Storage of these dormant plantlets will give a continuous production chain independent from the growing season.

Final report

Results and the Final report will be found here, as soon as the project is completed.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

Micropropagated shoots rooted in sterile miniplugs directly reduce the efforts and time during acclimatization in the greenhouse. Furthermore transplanting robotics can be used for this job.
Results will be:
- dormancy induction on different wild cherry clones as well as cherry rootstock clones rooted in miniplugs
- determination of parameters for dormancy induction
- determination of shoot cutting quality prepared for rooting
- determination in plant vitality before and after storage
- development of a new technology based on stored plantlets in vitro
- quick reaction to customers demand by the propagator
